Split Shank Ring: A Sleek and Unique Style

Last updated on February 20, 2023

Once popular in the 1920s, the split shank ring is one of the most elegant choices nowadays. With its distinct band design, this style is beloved for its unique appearance and ability to make the centre stone look larger and emphasized.

What Is a Split Shank Ring?

The split shank is a ring setting style designed with a band that parts as it reaches the centre stone. This design is distinct for having a visible space between the shoulders and the head of the ring, revealing some bare skin. However, there are split shank rings that maintain a split all the way around the band.

The split shank design is fluid. It can be combined with various stone shapes and sizes, which, in turn, influence the number and depth of splits and the width of the shank. This artistic style focuses attention on the head of the ring, making the stone appear more ornate. In addition, due to its airline, the split shank creates an optical illusion of a larger centre stone.

Split shank rings were one of the most popular choices during the Art Deco period, 1908 to 1935. Later, they gradually declined in popularity but made a comeback in the mid-century during the 1960s to 1970s and continue to be one of the top choices today.

Split shank rings can feature various designs, and each variation gives a ring a unique look and feel. The band can comprise two, three or four strands which are separated with space or interwoven.

One of the most popular variations is to set the band with pavé diamonds to achieve a more dramatic look. This adds beauty to the ring itself and brilliance to the centre stone. Another popular choice is to pair a split shank with the halo setting, which surrounds the centre stone with pavé or micropavé diamonds. This makes the centre stone look even larger and adds sparkle to the overall design.

To achieve a minimalist look, designers use east-west set gems and leave the shank plain whether it features a classic or twisted design. As you can see, split shank rings can have both elegant and dramatic looks, which is why they are versatile for any aesthetics.
