Making purchases online is becoming more and more popular. Let’s agree it’s quick and convenient. A lot of people prefer to buy diamonds online as well. Since most of them look for GIA-certified diamonds, let’s find out how to buy GIA-certified diamonds online and see what you should pay attention to when buying a certified diamond.
What is a GIA Certificate?
A GIA certificate is a grading report issued by the Gemological Institute of America listing quality characteristics of a particular diamond after professional inspection.
A certificate issued by the GIA contains information about the colour, clarity, cut and carat weight of the diamond along with grades for each of the characteristics.
The report also includes information on the stone’s polish and symmetry, whether it exhibits fluorescence as well as a diagram showing the diamond’s dimensions and proportions.
Why is GIA Certification Important?
When buying a diamond it’s important to make sure that it is accompanied by a certificate. This document attests that the stone’s quality has been confirmed by an independent professional.
Without a diamond certificate, you can never be sure if the seller claims accurate characteristics. While with a certificate issued by the GIA you can be sure you get what you pay for.
There are other reputable authorities that certify diamonds and their certificates are just as reliable. For example, the EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) and the AGS (American Gem Society) are both respected labs whose certificates you can fully trust.
Where to Buy GIA-Certified Diamonds Online?
Many shops sell diamonds online and the most reputable sellers always offer only certified stones.
We will not recommend any particular shop, just google and you will find the one that sells certified diamonds. To narrow down your search results just include GIA, EGL or AGL abbreviations and choose the shop that matches your requirements.
When browsing the shop’s website you will be able to see a copy of the stone’s original certificate. If not, try to contact the customer service and ask to email you the grading report of the diamond you are interested in.
How to Choose an Online Diamond Store
Once you have narrowed down your choice to websites offering certified diamonds, it’s time to see what each seller has to offer.
When buying a diamond online it’s very important to find out if you can see the stone before you buy it. This is very important since quality characteristics only cannot show you how the stone will look in real life.
For example, the clarity grade of a diamond doesn’t necessarily tell you how visible its flaws are. Stones of the same clarity grade may look different depending on the location of their inclusions. This also may enhance or diminish the level of brilliance.
That’s why it is recommended looking for a seller that can show high-quality pictures of each stone offered.
Things to Do After the Diamond is Received
When you receive your diamond, the first thing to do is to inspect it closely. You should do this to examine the stone’s actual quality and check if the diamond you got matches the one described in the certificate.
Certified diamonds often come with a unique ID number. This ID should be printed on the certificate and the same number should be laser-inscribed on the stone’s girdle.
Another way to check the diamond is to examine its diagram in the certificate. This diagram, known as diamond plot, contains the stone’s visible inclusions.
If you check your diamond with a loupe, you can see if the location of inclusions matches the layout in the certificate.
