Diamond laser inscription is perhaps more important for your stones than you think. These engravings can help you not only when deciding whether to buy the diamond, but also protect you from fraud. Let’s go into details.

What is a Diamond Laser Inscription?

Diamond laser inscription is a unique combination of letters and numbers engraved on a diamond girdle. These symbols serve as an ID that helps to identify a particular stone among others.

Diamonds are usually laser inscribed by grading labs at which they are certified.

Are Diamond Inscriptions Important?

The unique ID engraved on a diamond girdle is the same as the one on its grading report. Thus, it verifies that the stone is the one described in the certificate.

When buying diamonds, always ask the jeweller if the diamond you are considering is inscribed and match its inscription to the number in the certificate.

When taking your diamond to a jeweller to get it fixed, always remember to tell them about the inscription so that the person doing the repairs will be careful not to damage it by accident.

When you get the stone back, check the inscription to make sure you have the same diamond.

What If My Diamond Is Not Laser Inscribed?

Not all diamonds are laser inscribed and that’s totally fine.

Some manufacturers prefer not to pay for inscription services. In such cases, the diamond can be identified by its inclusions, since their number and location are unique to each stone.

Diamond certificates and grading reports contain inclusion plots or diagrams. These are maps that show each flow of the particular stone.

You can compare your diamond with the plot in the certificate and try to match the stone’s mapped inclusions.

Can I Have My Diamond Laser Inscribed?

If your diamond doesn’t have a laser inscription, you can always have your stone inscribed. Even if it has a unique ID, you might want to add a name or phrase on it.

Such engraving services are offered by the GIA and other laboratories for a fee. In fact, the inscription can contain whatever you want as long as it is doable.
